Sean Patrick survived late stages of ovarian cancer and two years later founded the nonprofit HERA Foundation, which has raised more than $800,000 that has gone directly to ovarian cancer research and programs. Patrick has raised awareness and funds through a variety of events, including the popular HERA Climb4Life events held around the country.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 22,000 cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed this year, and 15,000 women will die from it. More common in women over 55, there is about a one in 69 chance that a woman will contract ovarian cancer during her lifetime. Ovarian cancer remains the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women, and though it is a survivable disease, early detection is vital.

What are the early warning signs of ovarian cancer? This is a very difficult question to answer, because while there are symptoms in the beginning stages of the disease, they tend to be so mild that both the woman herself and her doctors may not think the symptoms are indicative of ovarian cancer.
